Born on August 3, 1950, on the outskirts of Indianapolis, Indiana.
I showed some artistic talent growing up. In High School I was mentored by Kay Clay, an art teacher and professional watercolorist.
In 1968 I was awarded a scholarship to Herron School of Art, Indianapolis, and attended weekend preparatory courses at Herron.
While working that summer in Chicago, I was offered a job as an apprentice artist with an ad agency in Chicago. I stayed in Chicago and forfeited the scholarship. I learned commercial art and took part time classes at the American Academy of Art in Chicago as a student at large.
My first exhibition was in 1969; a 2-artist exhibition at a gallery in downtown Chicago.
1970 - 1980: I continued to work in the commercial art field through the 70’s while working on and selling drawings and paintings in my free time, as well as watercolor portraits on commission and through an agent in Milwaukee WI. I worked in watercolor, pencil and ink; symbolist and figurative in style and subject matter.
I relocated from Chicago to Asheville NC in 1980. In 1986 I began experimenting, mixing in acrylic with other media, simultaneously exploring abstract and nonobjective art, which I’ve continued.
From 1990 through 2004 I exhibited in a number of group exhibitions and a showcase exhibit at Blue Spiral 1 Gallery, Asheville NC.
I exhibited work at A L Morency Gallery in Washington, VA in 1994.
In 2015 I had the honor of displaying work at a group exhibition, celebrating the 25th anniversary of the opening of Blue Spiral 1 Gallery.
As of April 2018, Asheville NC became my secondary location, and I now spend more of the year in central Indiana in order to spend more time with my family.
My Abstract and non objective work falls generally into one of 2 styles, overlapping in some instances;
One style is casual, and playful. The other tends toward geometric form and compositional symmetry.
The former is more 'spontaneous'. The latter is more planned, formal, and compositional.

My Abstract and non objective work falls generally into one of 2 styles, overlapping in some instances;
One style is casual, and playful. The other tends toward geometric form and compositional symmetry.
The former is more 'spontaneous'. The latter is more planned, formal, and compositional.
The media I use include acrylic, ink, pastel, watercolor, and prismacolor, on paper or canvas.
I may begin a piece with an image or composition in mind, juxtaposition of geometric forms colors, range of depth. Other work may begin with lines or forms, or a color field, and evolve from there.
The end result varies, but whether it's realistic, symbolist, abstraction, or non objective, the goal is the same: to create an image that attracts and intrigues the viewer in some way.
I remember myself as being a sort of strange and introverted little kid. Confused about the world, but still fascinated by it - both the natural world, and the world of humans; and further, the mysteries of the Universe less visible to us.
I enjoyed climbing trees, exploring a nearby woods, creek, a marsh where I collected tadpoles.

I enjoyed climbing trees, exploring a nearby woods, creek, a marsh where I collected tadpoles... looking through a microscope at the life in a drop of pond water, or through a telescope at the craters of the moon... my Grandfather's tool & dye shop and it's metal shavings and equipment... architecture of old buildings... books - fact or fiction... theater, film, history, the Arts, science fiction & fantasy.
And at an early age, drawing and painting became an absorbing outlet for me.
After I got into my High School years, I "came out of my shell" socially, but even then, as now, I'm still a bit of an introvert where my creative process is concerned.
I still draw inspiration from my mental library of thoughts and associations with the past and their accompanying sensations. But I'm not limited to those. The present and future are still full of endless possibilities for expression.
I like the following description of the artistic process:
"If the physical is the frame of the spiritual, then so it is also is with creative expression. Paint and other mediums are a material frame for a mental or spiritual expression of the artist. Just as the musician’s instrument and sheet music are the physical frames for the music itself, which comes from the mind and spirit of the composer.
An artist might like to explain beauty or emotions, but they elude explanation.
An artist can only attempt to express them in a way that the observer might also relate to. The simplest elements: the dot, the line, the plane, rhythm, the interplay of color and form, all can all work together without the need for explanation".
